On the main page, you can select a direction ("azimuth") in which to view the sky for your current location and the current date and time.

On selecting a direction, a horizon view of the sky will appear on your phone. The direction is at the bottom of the image. The terrain is there to help you orient your viewing, and may not represent exactly what you see.

While viewing the celestial map, you may desire to re-orient it in some way. With the buttons, you can rotate the heavens in increments of 45 degrees. The field of view itself is what one typically sees, about 45 degrees.

The night vision option is to help preserve the night-adjustment of your eyes. It can take a few minutes to up to a half-hour for some people. To maintain your adaptation, you can toggle on the Night Vision option.

Remember, the map on your phone is small and flat. The sky is huge and domelike, and it will take a little time to adjust to the vastness of the heavens.

The symbols for the planets and other objects are described online and are not to scale. A blue background indicates it is daylight; at night the background is black. Happy observing!
